Top Five in the $5 Movie Bin

Have you ever dug through the $5 DVD bin at your local Walmart? You probably push through a bunch of movies that you’ve never heard of before, or movies that you’ve seen that left much to be desired BUT if you just keep digging, you can strike gold sometimes.

Now that I’ve had some free time (since we got all moved in and I’m off school until the end of August), I like to watch movies when I have the chance – and I don’t like to pay a lot to watch said movies.

Here’s a list of the top five titles I’ve come across in the $5 bin.

5: Cruel Intentions

Yes, this gem was in the $5 movie bin. I can’t help but love how delightfully twisted this movie is, and the ending gets me every time.

4: The Bourne Legacy

I’ve enjoyed all of the Bourne movies up to this point, so I was a little surprised that the most recent Bourne movie was in the bin. Hey, I’m not complaining though.

3: 13 Going on 30

You’re lying to yourself if you say you don’t enjoy this movie. I love Jennifer Garner and how sweet and funny she is in this piece about finding yourself and the rush to grow up (and the hopes to be young again after growing up).

2: Snow White & The Huntsman

This was another movie I was a little surprised to find in the bin, but again, I’m not complaining. Although this movie didn’t get the best reviews, I enjoyed it. I mean, hello, look at the star studded cast.

1: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

I don’t care if I’ve already seen this movie ten times, I will watch it again, and again, and again. It’s humorous and sweet. The chemistry amongst the cast is undeniable.

After you find something decent to watch in the $5 bin, hop on over to the $1 candy bin, and find yourself a snack to munch on while you’re watching your movie.

What gems have you found in the $5 movie bin?

Dorm Seating

This is a follow up on what you need for your dorm, because dorm rooms are usually so stinkin’ small that you don’t even have breathing room.

I came across this great tutorial on how to make a crate seat out of a basic plastic storage crate.

Making one of these seats is easy and affordable – you’ll be able to do it at home in a snap.

Check out the full tutorial by Ginger Snaps, here.

Housing Tips

Well, now that the semester is over, some of you may be anticipating a new move over the summer or for next semester. I, myself, am searching for a new apartment at the moment, and let me tell you, it is not easy when you have a small budget. So, I figured I’d search the web for a great set of tips to find affordable housing that works for you. Thanks to HowStuffWorks here’s a list of 10 tips for finding cheap housing. Good luck in your moving ventures!

A Night In

Okay, as young twenty-somethings, you may have the urge to go out and party on the weekends – which isn’t cheap. You figure, you spend gas money to drive to the clubs or taxi fair, a cover charge depending on where you go, you drink like a fish all night (at probably $5 a pop for drinkson a good night), and if you’re anything like me, you want some food at some point during the night. So…how many of us can actually afford to do this on a regular basis? Not me. I cannot bring myself to drop close to $100 on a night out just to feel blah and drained the next day.

Here’s an alternative. Spend the night in for once – I know, crazy talk. You don’t need to go out and drop a pretty penny just to have some fun and unwind. A lazy night in, in sweatpants and a hoodie, curled up on the couch with a coffee table full of yummy snacks, a cold beer, and a great movie playing on the TV sounds good to me.¬†

Let’s start with what to wear for your relaxing night in – I love sweatpants. They’re comfy and cozy and they don’t restrict my body when I’m laying in various positions on the couch while I try to get comfy. If you don’t feel like sporting sweatpants, at least consider a nice, fluffy blanket for your own comfort, because it makes the night more enjoyable.

Snacks, snacks, and more snacks, please. It’s okay to snack to your heart’s content sometimes. Don’t go overboard though – remember, we are being budget conscious. What’s a movie without popcorn? Nothing, if you ask me. You can pick up a box of popcorn for somewhere around $3, I never pay much for it. Another great food item to have for your night in is pizza, and you don’t have to order out. Yes, I can see where people are skeptical of frozen pizzasome of it does taste like cardboard – but, I’ve tried Digiorno, and it is very yummy. The best part? You can pick up a Digiorno Pizza for around $5. Pizza and popcorn, and now we need something sweet to balance them. I’m thinking Sour Patch Watermelon gummy candies or Swedish Fish – you can pick up either one for $1 at most grocery stores. There you go, now you have all the snacks you need for the night for about $10so good, so far.

Now for drinks – beer, soda, juice, or whatever your heart desires. When I have pizza and sit down to watch a good movie, I like to crack open a cold beer (my favorite is Bud Light). If you buy a six pack of beer, you usually spend around $7, give or take depending on what kind you like. If you get a two liter of soda instead, you’re only going to be looking at $2 max. So, with food and drinks, you’re still under $20.

Time to pick the entertainment. Should you go with a new release that won a bunch of awards this past award season, or should you stick with a favorite that you’ve watched at least a dozen times now? It’s all about preference. If you think Dallas Buyers Club looks good, go for it. You love Jennifer Lawrence, so you’re leaning towards American Hustle – great choice. However, I’m a softie for flicks that are a little older. My favorites you ask? Mean Girls, Easy A, or She’s the Man.

Okay, if you’re in your twenties and you haven’t seen Mean Girls before, then you’ve been living under a rock. I’ve seen it at least 20 times at this point – it never gets old. Mean Girls scored 83% on Rotten Tomatoes – the average rating was a 9/10. It’s Lindsay Lohan at her finest – before she got into the drugs and went crazy. It’s full of quotes that will remain in your brain for eternity and lots of ‘oh my god’ moments. This movie is so fetch.

You can rent Mean Girls on Amazon or Google Play for $2.99. If you’re a Netflix subscriber, you’re in luck, because they just added Mean Girls back to their lineup.

If you like Mean Girls, you should also check out Just My Luck and Freaky Friday – two other movies that Lindsay Lohan was very entertaining in.

Oh, Emma Stone, how I love you. Easy A is another movie that I just can’t get enough of. Is it the hilarious ways of Emma Stone, or the points in the movie where you can say, “wow, yes, that’s totally how high school is”? It’s just everything. The cast is fabulous – including favorites from my teen years like Penn Badgley, Amanda Bynes, and Aly Michalka. Easy A got an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes.

You can rent Easy A on Amazon or Google Play for $2.99 – I was lucky enough to buy it on special from Google Play for $4.99 back in December, because it’s worth watching again and again.

Did I mention Stanley Tucci is in it? That takes it up another ten points. If you enjoy Easy A, then you should also check out Zombieland and House Bunny, because Emma Stone is just infectious – she’s awesome.

She’s The Man came out when Amanda Bynes was still sane and at the peak of her acting career – you know, before the car accidents and tweets about Drake. There’s still hope she will go back into acting and bang out a few more great movies. Anyway, She’s The Man will keep you laughing with all the hilarious antics of Amanda’s character – Oh, and did I mention there’s a young Channing Tatum in it? He gets sweaty and takes his shirt off. Surprisingly, She’s The Man only scored a mere 43% on Rotten Tomatoes, but don’t let that discourage you.

Unfortunately, Amazon only offer She’s The Man for purchase, not rental – luckily though, it’s only $9.99. You can rent it through Google Play for $2.99.

I have always been an Amanda Bynes fan, ever since her Nickelodeon days. If you like She’s The Man, I recommend What A Girl Wants or Hairspray (especially Hairspray, because you’ve gotta love a good, catchy musical).

Alright, so lets recap the must-haves for your night in. You’ve got your comfy clothes or blanket, your array of yummy snacks, and most importantly, your awesome choice of a movie, or two. And the best part? You can enjoy a night in for no more than $30.

Be right back, I’m going to go watch She’s The Man now!

Top Five Websites for Affordable College Fashion

Happy Spring, everybody! Now that the weather is warming up, it’s time to pack away your heavy sweaters and coats and fill your closet with pastels, short-sleeves, and anything else that will put a spring in your step.

Necessary Clothing isn’t a store that I am familiar with, but after browsing their website, I think that’s it’s a site that I will definitely start using more. How did it make it so high on the list for affordable and fashionable college apparel? Could it be the great customer reviews? According to reviews on Yelp, Necessary Clothing is “Definitely a must in SoHo if you can’t afford designer clothes,” and “Trendy, cheap clothes. In the article from Yahoo Finance, they also talk about how quickly 10 Dollar Mall‘s presence is growing on social media – they have around 3000 followers on Instagram and around 1200 followers on Pinterest.

Finally, coming in at number one, Forever 21 – one of my favorite stores. Forever 21 has been around for sometime now, and with great fashions and awesome prices to match, no wonder they’ve garnered the following that they have. According to an article by the Los Angeles Times, Forever 21 opened a new headquarters in LA a couple of years ago – LA is the manufacturing capital of the United States and full of fashion opportunities. Happy Shopping!

Calling All Scarf Fanatics!

Hello Everyone! I had a great time on my spring break, and of course I did a little shopping and found some great deals. One of my favorite accessories (like I’ve said time and time again) is scarves. While I was out shopping, I noticed a big sign in the window of Charlotte Russe that said, “Scarves, $5” and let me tell you, I couldn’t get in that store fast enough.

scarf, charlotte russe, affordable, fashionable

However, I know that I have to limit myself when it comes to loading up on scarves (which is hard to do when they’re on sale for $5), seeing as I already have so many, but I couldn’t pass up a really cute, cream colored scarf that was trimmed in lace. Just wanted to share this great sale with my other affordable fashion fanatics! Now, go load up on some cute scarves at Charlotte Russe, and if you can’t make it into the store, visit their website, here.

Wedding Attire on a Budget

My best friend is getting married next summer, and she has asked me to be the maid of honor. I’m blessed and honored, to say the least. So, much like me, my best friend Justine is a savvy shopper. The bridesmaids are all already tall and it’s a summer wedding, so we decided on sandals – we wanted them to have a little sparkle though, too. We worked together to find these awesome sandals, from Payless, that has beautiful gems on them and are silver, so they worked with her teal and orange color scheme. The best part? They were originally $24.99, on sale for $19.99, and I found a 20% coupon code on RetailMeNot, making the grand total – drum roll please$15.99. I shared the coupon code with the other bridesmaids, and Payless has the option to ship your package to your local store for free, so we all got our shoes for a steal. I was pretty excited for this find, just wanted to share them with anyone else who may need a nice, formal pair of sandals for a wedding or other event!
